Magnetic resonance was first studied by the Nobel prize winning team of Felix Bloch and Edward Purcell in 1946.

July 3, 1977 marked the date of the first test of a magnetic resonance imaging device. The test took nearly five hours to complete. It worked by emitting a magnetized field and mapping the disturbances created by the body to a computer model.

The MRI allows doctors to view problems with soft tissue that would be invisible on an x-ray machine.

In the early 1980′s MRI devices were starting to be implemented in hospitals.

Open MRI devices with breaks in the walls of the cylinder to accomodate for claustrophibic or obese patients were created in 1993.
