While the creation of completely prosthetic eyes have existed since ancient times, there has been very little change in their design.

Early Egyptians are credited with the first use of replacement eyes as early as 500 b.c. They were worn similarily to a monocle, outside the eye.

In the 15th to 19th century artificial eyes made of gold and glass were insered into the eye sockets. However, they were uncomfortable and prone to breaking.

During the course of World War II acrylic plastics were developed that were more comfortable to wear.

Acrylics remain in use today as the primary material used to manufacture prosthetic eyes.
